HUD Releases FY24 Budget - NACCED Attends Roundtable with Sec. Fudge
Monday, NACCED Executive Director Laura DeMaria attended an industry leaders’ conversation about the President’s FY24 proposed budget with US Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Marcia Fudge. In addition to Sec. Fudge, in attendance were Deputy Secretary Adrianne Todman, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Community Planning and Development Marion McFadden, the leaders of 24 Washington, DC- based housing advocacy organizations, and additional senior HUD leadership.
In her remarks, Secretary Fudge emphasized that HUD’s FY24 budget reflected the Biden administration’s priority to provide all Americans, including those experiencing the greatest housing and economic instability, the greatest access to opportunities to grow and thrive. Deputy Secretary Todman also emphasized the budget’s long-overdue investment in HUD’s people and departments.
The proposed FY24 budget, a 1.6% increase overall from FY22 appropriations, includes:
• $3.3 billion in CDBG
• $1.8 billion in HOME, a 20% increase
• $90 million to the Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity
• $32.7 billion for the Housing Choice Voucher program, which would serve approximately 180,000 additional families
The budget also supports the permanent authorization of the Community Development Block Grant-Disaster Relief (CDBG-DR) program. Additional themes included the administration’s priorities to reduce costs for new homeowners and expand access to ownership, address and prevent housing discrimination, and advance efforts to end homelessness. In her closing remarks, Secretary Fudge emphasized the need for advocates to discuss
CDBG and share program success stories in order to make the case for the program to continue to receive funding from Congress.
Each year, the president provides Congress with a budget that acts as a blueprint for the appropriations process. While the President’s budget is a suggestion, Congress has the final authority on the federal budget. NACCED will continue to update members on developments in the FY24 federal budget process.
